God’s Perspective on Down Syndrome

Isaac2

This is my son Isaac. The doctors say that he has Down Syndrome, but God says:

Very first off I am going to start with what the bible says. Isaiah 53:5 says that by His stripes we are healed and in 1 Peter 2:24, it says by whose stripes you were healed. I know this is a very hard concept to grasp, but we as believers are to consider ourselves healed. So, I consider my son Isaac healed by the stripes of Jesus Christ and I am standing firm on this statement forever!

Let’s look at how the world views DS first, then I will share my views on how God views DS. First I want to look at the definition of Syndrome. My advanced English dictionary on my phone says that syndrome means “a pattern of symptoms indicative of some disease”. So right from the start the world labels my son with some kind of disease. Per Wikipedia DS can be identified in a newborn by direct observation or in a fetus by prenatal screening. And pregnancies with this diagnosis are often terminated. Wow! This says a whole lot about how most of the world views DS.

Now, here is my view on God’s perspective on DS. As a believer in Jesus Christ, I have learned over the past few years that we are to look at ourselves and others in the Spirit. God is a Spirit and His Spirit is in us and that is how God looks at us. He sees us in the Spirit. The bible says that Jesus came and bore our sicknesses on the cross. He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses and diseases. Matthew 8:17 NKJV. Therefore, I believe that Jesus Christ took Down Syndrome, which is considered a disease by most of the world, and crucified it on the cross. Did you notice I said “crucified”? That is past tense. So with that being said, if God looks at us in the Spirit, then God sees my son Isaac in the Spirit – Healthy, pure, holy, and HEALED. The only Down Syndrome that God sees, if He can actually see it, is the Down Syndrome that WAS CRUCIFIED on the cross. DS has been done away with! And guess what? This is how I and my family choose to see DS. We do not go by physical appearance. We do not see Isaac as most of the world sees DS in my son. My family and I view Isaac with the eyes of faith knowing that God has healed our son Isaac. The bible says to live by faith not by sight. I believe this means that we are not to put our trust in what we see with our physical eyes, but put our trust in the things of the Spirit. We put our ABSOLUTE trust in the things that are in heaven and there is NO Down Syndrome in heaven! Our son Isaac is a normal human being just like any other normal child on this earth.

Isaac

My intention of this blog is not to offend anyone, but to show people how my family and I have chosen to deal with this circumstance. We focus on the inward appearance not on the outward and it works. Isaac is the most beautiful, very happy, and content baby boy. The bible says that God gives us believers the desires of our hearts. And my desire is for the whole world to view every person with Down Syndrome as God does- healed by the stripes of Jesus Christ. Each day as I look at Isaac with the eyes of faith, the more those physical appearances of DS are fading away. Sometimes I truly cannot see it physically at all. My desire is for the world to see NO trace of Down Syndrome in my son at all, but as a normal child with no disease, disabilities, or abnormalities. The bible also says that God’s will is to be done on earth as it is in heaven. So, I believe that God does not want DS on this earth. There is no DS in heaven, therefore God does not want it on the earth. My family and I believe that Down Syndrome does not come from God just as we believe that sickness or disease doesn’t come from God. Yes we live in a fallen world, but we live in the same fallen world that the people lived in when Jesus walked the earth. And Jesus healed everyone who came to Him. Jesus is the same today as He was yesterday.

We do not deny the fact that our child has an extra chromosome, but we DO DENY that it has a right to stay there or be there in the first place. We don’t glorify Down Syndrome or focus on it. We focus on giving Jesus Christ the glory in healing Isaac. I am reminded of the Scripture in John 9:2 when Jesus was walking along and saw a man who was born blind at birth. His followers asked Him why was this man born blind? Was it because of his sin or his parents sin. And Jesus replied, it was neither his or his parents fault. Jesus said this happened so that the power of God could be seen in him. This is what my family and I choose to focus on. The power of God seen in Isaac. We don’t focus on the problem or what caused the problem, but we focus on the end result – HEALED BY THE STRIPES OF JESUS CHRIST!

  1. I love Isaac just the way God made him. :0)

  2. Beautifully written. Thank you for sharing. Blessings to you and your family~

  3. Isaac is beloved, and I love the way you see him.

  4. I see you guys keep deleting my comments (or any comment that disagrees with your point of view.) it’s your blog so you can do what you like. But since you don’t allow open dialogue on your blog I may write a blog post on this pointing hot the bad and dangerous theology and how you won’t allow anyone to help you think through the faults in this without deleting their comment in my blog. I feel I owe it to the community in case they were to come across this.

  5. I agree, healed by the stripes of Jesus! What a beautiful child, you are blessed.

  6. Your son is very beautiful. Who says what normal is. To be in is simply a word. You have a beautiful happy child, that in itself is a previous gift from god. I wish you and your family every happiness in the future

  7. Your son is lucky to have you! What a wonderful outlook you have. He is as lucky to have you as you are to have him. 🙂

  8. Bless your precious family and Isaac. I like what jerri said, what is normal. A setting on a washing machine! None of us are “normal” in the sense that since we live in a fallen world, we all have physical, mental and emotional issues, to some degree and we learn to “cope” with them. I was deeply touched by your perspective and will re-blog it on my site. I have progressing ALS, and although my body is weakening, my spirit is growing in passion and purpose. My family too works toward seeing “me in the spirit” but it’s a challenge. Thank you for the poignant reminder for all of us, but personally from me. My identity is in Christ, I am not defined by a disease! Tracey

  9. We have lived by this so called “theology” for thirty years it is absolutely biblical to call those things that are not as though they were. We are ,absolutely, to know no man after the flesh but after the Spirit. We never ask God for healing. Why ask for something that is already given? We do thank Him for HIS WORD, whom God sent to heal us and deliver us from destruction. Another past tense reference. This theology, some want to call it, has served us well in our family, who has since grown and now have their own families. I can tell of the times of being instantly healed of pneumonia, heart condition, thyroid disease, no flue, no colds, no hospitals, no surgeries; a pregnancy our daughter and her husband was told to terminate produced a beautiful baby boy, so precious and healthy. Thank God for the Godly Doctor that advised her through her pregnancy. We have nothing against doctors, we go to them for check ups, there is nothing wrong with having health care providers in your life, but Jehovah Rahpha has never let us down. What God has given us is a fruit filled garden, it is our job to chase out the fox that spoils the vine. – blessing to you, thank you for sharing your faith.

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

  11. Thank you all for the wonderful comments. It is very encouraging to know that there are other believers out there that think the way my family and I do.. Blessings to you all 🙂

  12. Your son is a beautiful soul! 🙂

  13. Amen. I come into agreement and stand with you and your family. I life you all up so that you can continue to stand. So that the doctors and others can marvel and say:”What must I do to be saved”. God has healed me from many illnesses, I have seen prayer heal someone of MS. We thank God for what he has revealed through science but we only depend on God.:

Father, in the name of Jesus, I come before You
asking You to heal Isaac. It is written that the
prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will
raise him up. And if there have been any committed
sins ,then we will be forgiven. We let go of all
unforgiveneness, resentment, anger and bad feelings
    toward anyone.

Isaac’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and he
desires to be in good health. We seek truth that will
make him free – both spiritual and natural. Isaac was
brought at a price and he desires to glorify You in his
spirit and body – they both belong to You.

Thank you Father, for sending Your word to heal and deliver
Isaac from all destructions. Jesus, You are the Word who
became flesh and dwelt among us. You bore Isaac’s griefs and
carried his sorrows and sickness. You were pierced through for
his transgressions and crushed for our iniquities, the chastening
for his wellbeing fell upon You, and by Your stripes he is healed.

Father, we give attention to Your words and incline our ear to Your
sayings. We will not let them depart from our sight, but will keep them
in the midst of our heart, for they are life and health to Isaac’s whole
    body.

Thank You that Isaac will prosper and be in health, even as his soul prospers.
    Amen.

  14. This was beautifully written and your son is adorable. I have a son with autism, and I feel the same way about him. I know many other parents with autistic kids and it is so hard for them to view their kids like I do. I hope your son remains happy and he is lucky to have parents like you.

    • Thank you so much. When my wife and I got married she had two boys with autism. one of them has been totally healed from it, and the other one is next. keep standing firm in the faith and command that autism to leave in Jesus name!

  15. A beautifully written post! Your son is absolutely beautiful. May God richly bless you and keep you. Stand firm in your faith, Dear Friend….my prayers go with you.

  16. A child is a blessing from God.
your little boy is a cutie, as long as he is in good health, that all that matters. 🙂
    God bless you all!

  17. We, too, are standing for our son’s genetic healing and have been since his birth. There are others out there! You are not alone! We are in an international prayer group with 11 other sets of parents. Our son is 15 months old. He is the blessing. This diagnosis is not. We will fight for him because Jesus deserves it! He stood at the whipping post for my child’s healing. We speak LIFE into our son everyday and command every problem and lack to leave his body in the name of Jesus! The enemy can’t stop it! It’s a finished work, and we will see it manifested in our son!
If you’re interested in being on a prayer team of sorts (with other parents) and a ministry backing you up and supporting you, please contact me. It’s been great for us to have extra prayer support, help, and encouragement!

    • Kristen I am interested in finding out more about your group. Also I am interested in knowing what manifestations of healing that you have already seen in your son. My husband and I are also standing on the word of God for healing for our son.

    • I am interested in being a part of your prayer group or one like it…our son us 12 months old. We were told he is DS but he has nit manifested any symptoms as we too are believing in Christ Jesus for his his healing and are confident in His Word.

  18. keep on loving your kid, God will make a way where there is not way and testimoney shall come in the name of jesus

  19. I used to attend a church camp in Southern California. It was a denominational camp and totally off the track spiritually. The facilities were used to host hindu gurus etc. But, God continually brought born again Christians to bear witness in that promiscious and worldly environment. I now because I attended camps as a camper every year starting from 1973 until I met the Lord and was born into God’s family in 1979. How do I know God was blessing that place with a Christian witness despite the New age atmoshere of the place? ONe of the first things the Lord told me after my conversion was to apply to be a camp counsellor. I was accepted and became a craft councellor for July and August 1980…One day while I was there, one of the adult Down’s Syndome residents who was staying with a household of men who lived under the care of the camp nurse was sitting on a stone wall with his legs crossed and a very clear conversation ensued.
“Don’t you remember me? I come every year.” “No, I’m not sure,” I said. “Well, I used to drool and rock back and forth,” and I did vaguely remember him from past years…Here he sat very still and composed introducing a conversation with me. “God healed me! I couldn’t do almost anything before. One day I was with my Momma J_____ at Melodyland in Anaheim, California at worship. God spoke to me and said, ‘It’s time for you to CHANGE!’ And I’ve never been the same.” I have to admit I had no context to understand this encounter. In fact I forgot it until I read about the healing of a young Dutch boy healed of autism named Oomen which I saw on a video on internet. He was in special schools but his mother began praying and proclaiming God’s promises over him for 2 years; She changed and the family atmosphere changed but it took 2 or so years before the boy began to manifest healing. It is a powerful testimony. Look it up. I think it was Gloria Copland’s teachings that guided the woman. NOw he is entierly normal and able to explain what was holding him in bondage during those years. He must be grown today…When I heard this amzing testimony, God reminded me of the other experience I had lived all those years ago in _California. Now I have faith to appropriate the truth of this healing. I know that young man was fully healed of Dwons s and was at that point still living in institutionalized care, but afterwards, I would so love to know what the Lord did for him! I know it was wonderful…God sets the captives free!

  20. Brother thank you. Finally someone else who is standing for healing. The authotity is yours the healing has already been purchased. We have walked this road and witnessed the healing virtue of Jesus because we chose to war for our daughter’s
destiny. We love her and want all that Jesus died for her to have.
I know that if we did not dare to believe God for her healing we would not have seen his healing virtue released .

Our daughter was born 10/10/09 diagnosed with down syndrome . We refuse to confess or come into agreement with that report but have done everything medically necessary.
When I first had her I was devastated. The doctors were already talking about heart surgery. I remember crying after the cardiologist left my hospital room, After he left I heard the Holy Spirit say “Why are you so down cast when you wrestle from a position of authority. I knew then that if I was wrestling then there had to be an opponet. That is when we realized that the enemy was behind my daughter’s diagnosis. It was then that my husband and I decided to take up the sword of the spirit and fight for our daughter.
As her mom the first thing I did was draw a diagram of every part of my daughter’s body that was sick and deformed. We gathered a worldwide prayer team and asked them to pray one by one we attacked in prayer everything on my diagram her heart, liver, neck, eyes etc

We stood on Isaiah 53: the first thing God healed was her neck that went front the typical down syndrome neck to being completely normal. This healing was gradual and God healed one side and about 6 months later healed the other side
Second, her eyes that were just slits at birth we took authority over sickness and commanded them to open and they did in the powerful name of Jesus. To the doctors unbelief her liver issues were healed.

They also took her off the down syndrome growth chart.

Even her pediatrician and nurses cornered us and wanted to know what was going on with our daughter we let them know that they were witnessing the healing virtue of Jesus. Her doctor who said she didn’t even know that there was a God was so impacted by the healings she vowed to start praying to my God. All glory belongs to God.
God has healed so much that people don’t know her diagnosis unless we tell them.

We do not segment the word of God either all of it is true or none of it is. Isaiah 53:5 by his stripes my daughter is healed. The provision is there we must war, activate, and enforce it by faith. Just as man made laws must be enforced spiritual laws must be activated by faith and prayer.

It is the thief who has come to steal kill and destroy destines. God wishes above that my daughter prospers and be in GOOD health.

I do not choose to agree with anything that doesn’t agree with scripture. The word of God.

I am a witness that Jesus heals ALL diseases. We have witnessed our daughter’s healing of down syndrome symptoms and we will continue to stand until the final part of her healing and restoration are manifested.

Be encouraged God’s word is alive and well. Down syndrome was nailed to the cross 2,000 years ago and that is where it belongs.

As a believer healing is your covenant right your son is also under that covenant. God is not a respecter of persons what he has done for us he can do for you.
    All glory to the LORD
    Mother of a divine miracle

  21. We always want to be an encouragement and a blessing. We would just like to know where it is that you want to share it?

  22. Sandra Conley, Romans 6 Man and others who are standing on the word of God that says everyone is healed and whole thanks to Jesus and believe that we can see freedom from all diseases and disorders that compromise this health that Jesus paid for, I would love to get in touch with you personally. Is there a way that we can do this? Your testimony is very encouraging! I shared it with other parents as well. We are all standing together on the Word of God believing that our kids are healed and many parents are seeing amazing changes! I believe that standing together that we will see even more kids set completely free from defect and lack here on earth as it will be in heaven. My email is ninaforchrist@googlemail.com

  23. I, too, am believing for the very same miracle to manifest in my child…….have been since her birth. For my husband and I, it’s been a journey of learning and growing in the Lord because we did not carry the strength in our spirit that we carry now. God has nurtured us every step of the way and though we’ve always “known” she’d be healed and whole one day, it has not been since recently that we actually grasp the power that we have to step forward without fear of failure. Our daughter, like your son, is healed and we rejoice now for this manifestation that has not yet come to pass in the flesh. This is a year of miracles and I am counting on giving our testimony as well. Thanks for sharing your faith!

  24. Thank you so much for sharing I hold the same view with my son Asher who has an extra chromosome and I wrote out some scripture which affirms God’s promises for him and read it out every morning before he lives for creche and tell God to perfect that which he has started in his life. I am really encouraged that there are believers who do not believe the doctors’ report but hinge on God’s word. Give my love to isaac.

  25. I’m thankful that you wrote this from your heart and it’s in my heart now to stand for my daughter.

  26. If some people have the gift of singleness, why can’t some people have the gift of Down Syndrome?

  27. DS is not a gift..my child is a beautiful soul….you gotta be crazy if you dont think there is something genetically wrong here (people with DS)…it comes with all kinds of health issues..thankfully our son hasnt had much health issues…there wont be any DS in the kingdom of heaven…saying DS is a gift is like saying cancer is a gift…BULLSHIT!!!!

    • 1. There will be no suffering in Heaven, true, but it brings us closer to Christ in this world.

      2. A believer should not be using obscene language on his blog.

      • sorry it sounds “obscene” but your comment that diseases are gifts is “obscene language” to me….its ok, however..we just disagree…good luck with your theology on that…blessings to you

  28. Cancer, Autism, DS etc. are not gifts from God. Full restoration in every area of our lives is what Jesus came to give us. We must believe we receive what we ask for and we will have it. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, I stand on the solid rock of God’s word concerning my daughter who was diagnosed with DS.
